I think they are described as annual because they will not tolerate frost. I think what people do in Europe they take cuttings in the autumn, stick them in sand in the cellar and plant them out in the spring.

An old fashioned plant, geraniums seems to have made a come-back at the moment.
They do grow so easy, need no special care and don't mind drought.
We stayed with friends on a farm earlier in the year and I bought home lots of cuttings. Most of them grew and with the climbing ones, I put one of each colour in hanging pots. They are now hanging on my son's patio in glorious colour. The pots look so pretty with 3 or 4 different colours hanging.
Good luck with your unusual one. Maybe it is a bit more temperamental than the coimmon ones.
