I think they go to quickly recognize a poster and helps with remembering.

No one needs to be bothered about not liking other signatures, as we have the option to turn them off and not see them.

I have had them turned off ever since that option was available.

Thanks for the tip! I haven't looked in Settings for ages and had forgotten I could turn off the signatures.

Signatures are now turned off. Great!

Some I didn't mind, some seemed stupid, some take up too much space...and some you only need to read once before repetition becomes annoying. There's much less clutter on the forum when they aren't visible. Quite often signatures are not needed to recognise some posters.
