I never deep fry anything at home now.  Especially not chips.  I can't believe that my parents allowed me to heat up the chip pan and cook chips when I was only maybe 12 years old. I was never taught anything either about how to cover the flames and not pick up the pot when it caught on fire.  Still, I survived.

I kind of miss those twice cooked deep fried chips.  You had to cook them until nearly done, take the basket out of the oil and let them cool slightly for a minute and then dunk them back in to puff up.  Perfect.

Joono

I used to buy chips from the fish and chip shop  -  cold.

Take 'em home and freeze them.   It was cheaper than buying

the frozen supermarket ones.

But now you'd have to find one  that makes their own chips.

That way they're not defrosted ones.

I've noticed McCains has been re-packaging their vegies.

Nice new, more noticeable packaging.

Maybe their chips have run out and their new packets aren't available yet.

Nope, they have a full quota of freshly harvested spuds for freshly frozen half cooked chippies.

That would be a tough order these days. There are few who makes their own.

My local has been taken over by a hard working Vietnamese

mum and daughter.   They actually diamond cut their own chips.

The make great fish and chips, burgers everything.

They give you extra if you are a regular.

Did I mention how really hard working they are?  big grin smiley.gif

They sound like keepers. You'd better look after them and set booby traps for unsuspecting buyers if they decide to sell.

Ha ha gotta laugh at people that eat potatoes. See them lined up at the food court for chips and gravy. All extremely fat. It's sad that fatties don't realize it's what they put in their mouths that makes them fat

I don't like frozen chips. I have a dry fryer and it cooks chips and wedges great. The secret of  great chips is to par boil them first. I have a deep fryer but I've never used it.

I believe Coles and Woolies will be going 80% home brand in the future so we can all say goodbye to our fave brands.

Yes we are manipulated, we have been for years.

I've eaten spuds as a staple diet in different forms my whole life, including chips.

My weight range has always been in the healthy range so saying that potatoes make you fat is a ludicrous

statement and obviously no thought went into your post,stubborn_smiley_by_mirz123-d4bt0te_zps12f1a5a3.gif

Millions of people eat spuds and only a percentage are overweight and it's not because they eat spuds.

Friday night I was looking to buy frozen chips. Friday night is fish n chips night, right?

I usually get either McCains or Birds Eye crinkle cut chips in an attempt to buy Australian.

So all they had in the Fridges was McCains SHOESTRING chips or Birdseye POTATO WEDGES.

All other chips, crinkle cut or straight cut, were Coles brand

So I was forced to buy Coles brand if I wanted crinkle cut. Oh it was cheap cheap at only $2 for the 1kg pack!

So manipulated.

I dont buy (and i rarely eat) hot chips.

What is the quality difference between McCains crinkle cut chips  and Coles crinkle cut chips?
At the end of the day, isnt it all just chopped up potatoes?

Coles brand in other food items is not too bad i dont think. (except tin spaghetti..... *cheap* tin spaghetti in tomato sauce is erk)
