That - perhaps - is only since the Catholic Church granted anyone a divorce.
The Catholic Church does not grant divorces. That's a civil matter.
If I may be so bold.
What is an ANNULLMENT - if not a divorce.
A rose by any other name.
Etc, ect,
Civil divorce ends a civil marriage; a Church annulment declares that the Sacrament of Matrimony didn’t occur
Yep, living in ' holy matrimony ' - married right up there in front of the altar ( read alter) - living together in said ' matrimony ' for 20 (or whatever years) - said marriage didn't happen - said Sacrement of Matrimony - does not count & didn't occur.
How bl**dy convenient.
