Putting the D'Oh! in DIY

So you want to fit this lock to an aluminium frame glass sliding door...

You've lined up the lock/handle, and know where to drill the holes for the screws to hold it in place.

Not hugely difficult.

Take the little piece that fits into the door frame, that the lock locks on to, and lock it to the lock.

That way, when you slide the door closed the little piece fits into the door frame, showing you where you should make the holes to screw it in.

Very clever, everything lines up.

With the door closed, you can see that the lock doesn't fit exactly flush with the door.

No worries, you'll need some "packing" - a piece of scrap metal, cut to size, should do.

Potentially difficult, but not the hardest job in the world.

Right, you're holding everything in place, where it would go, if it was fitted (with some minor allowances taken into account).

Have you noticed that it's a 12cm gap from the edge of the door frame to the aluminium, where you want to drill those holes to fit that small piece that fits into the aluminium door frame?

Hmmm... Potentially hugely difficult.

The average drill bit is about 5cm long.

You can buy 15cm long drill bits online, but it's Christmas, and you probably wont see it much before February (There goes any notion of a quick and/or easy afternoon job).

Now may be the time to put everything back in the box, for another day...

The correct bit will auger well for a successful job.Smiley Wink
