Another old man bird turned up in the middle of the day, today...

He wandered around, amusing himself, making a point of not listening to me, ha ha...

"I'm putting this bread here, on the table, for the currawong..."...

He heard "Blah... blah... bread... help yourself...",,  ha ha...

It was late in the day and he was sitting in a plastic box, nibbling away at some birdseed when he made a "baby" noise...

And the penny dropped... he's not an old man bird, he's a young man bird...

His parents have been leaving him here over the last few days so that he can spend some time with adult birds other than themselves...

He was quiet, today, which is why I didn't recognise him, ha ha...

Over the last two days he's spent a fair amount of his time bellowing that it's unfair...He's not happy... He's been abandoned... What's going to happen if and when he gets hungry? ha ha...

Today he felt a little more confident... he very nearly made friends with some of the other birds, ha ha.

He has a very weary look - there's so much to take in...

Who would've thought that the world was such a big and complicated place...?

But he's grasped a few of the basics - how to get up on the roof at going home time and whine because his parents aren't already there to collect him, ha ha...

And his favourite for the day - how to clamber into a plastic box and nibble your way through the contents... ha ha.

Although his second favourite would have to be standing in the water dish, ankle deep, just because he could.... ha ha.

A grey butcher bird has been dropping by, here and there, mostly to sit and sing in the trees, and occasionally to have a scratch through the leaves to see what he can find...

I thought, seeing as I had some leftover bully beef, I'd chop it up and see what he thought of it...

Into a bowl and out to the table it went...

And this was pretty much the look on his face as he sat on the other side of the table, not even a foot away from me, ha ha...

I might have a new friend, ha ha.

I don't know Ecar.

Looks to me like that Butcher bird has the same look as I've seen on plenty of cats.

That, when you die I'm going to eat your face look

I was heading out and thought just to be nice I'd leave some chopped up meat for the butcher bird...

Okay... I think it's time for a change of plans... ha ha...

The butcher bird can have a treat if I feel like it, and he's here...

Because, as I discovered, he's not the only one who  likes finely chopped meat...

That wattlebird... ha ha...

The cheeky, cheeky blighter - "What do you mean it's not for me?"...

This is the same bird who decided, one time, that I'd been holding a piece of bread between my fingers for too long, so he landed on the table in front of me and took it from me... ha ha...

If, on a metallurgical scale, there's something bolder than brass then he's probably made out of that.... ha ha.

A pair of crimson rosellas visited this afternoon, briefly, before being chased away by a rainbow lorikeet...

It's good to see them coming into the garden again...

Poor dear Mother possum..."I'm sitting on the end of the ramp at the edge of the table and I want to get to the creamed corn but there's sunflower kernels in the way.... They're hard to walk on, and are hard going on my poor delicate little feet..."... ha ha...

So I smoothed a corridor through the kernels for her, so that she could walk on the nice, smooth table top instead, and get to her favourite food in comfort...

I know the way to her heart... ha ha...
