That training scheme you mention above was probably the best one devised. When I relocated to country Victoria from Sydney, I met some people who were on that scheme. There was a chorus of approval from all concerned. Not only did it keep them engaged (these were all long termers), they got paid a half decent wage, gained useful training and some of them ended up with a job after the completion of the scheme,which lasted 6 months from memory.
Being long term unemployed, that course would have had a positive impact on their self-esteem and mental health. Paul Keating's brainchild with help from the public service,no doubt.

OH&s - if you have trainees - employees etc - numbers need to be accounted for - given any untoward incident/accident.

Meaning - a business premium is calculated on employees/wages.

 

No. of employees - & - those undergoing training. 

 

Sheesh - some of us have been in business for more decades than I can count.

Yes of course they do....which is what I was saying.

You cannot claim tax deductions without spending the money and there are many ways that the employer can be found out.

And the paperwork gets more onerous every year.

My OH has been self employed for over 40 years and I have done the paperwork for the 37 years we have been married.

 

My gripe with Workers Compensation is the way the premiums are calculated.  My rate is 1.5% and my OH is nearly 4% but we pay his rate for the whole policy.   When I objected I was told that if the higher rate applies to more than half of the wages they do not bother to separate the amounts but just apply the higher rate.

Yes, it was six months.
It did give me a strong incentive to do my best even though I didn't know that I would be in the running for a job.
I even finished before time and was allowed to make a project to take home while waiting for the others to catch up.
My instructor was so impressed with my skill level that he pushed for the position with ship builder because he wanted to see me get rewarded for my efforts.
Having done that traineeship and then Work for the Dole Once a couple of years ago the difference is astronomical.
Work for the Dole was soul destroying.
Meaningless tasks and verbal abuse were the norm at Work for the Dole.
Nothing more highlights the change in society towards the unemployed than the difference between those two schemes.
Also points out that Labor are no longer Labor.
They are Liberal light.
Kevin Rudd had just as negative impact on Newstart recipients as any Liberal PM has since

You make a number of good points Martin.

 

One of the paradoxes of recent political times is the way Labor have completely abandoned their core constituency of working class people in  favour of inner city, latte drinking socialists. This has lead to Labor completely abandoning skills based traineeships and apprenticeships ( once a Labor strong suit ) in favour of every Tom Dick and Harry going to university, whether they are suited to a life of academia or not. This push for University for everyone has resulted in a dumbing down of educational standards and too many pretty ordinary graduates with devalued qualifications and not enough suitable employment opportunities.

 

On the flip side Australia is running short of builders, plumbers, diesel mechanics and industrial engineers as the trades have been neglected and undervalued by everyone for too long. We now have the strange situation where it is the Liberals who are trying to address the shortage of trades skills and training ( not really traditionally their best game )

 

Its strange times we are living in.
