David, I thought I'd pass this on to you to lighten things up and because I thought you might appreciate it.
I saw a show on Foxtel yesterday where they interviewed an up and coming young NRL player named Ryan Papenhuyzen. He has a pretty big following and seems like a really nice bloke. He mentioned that he owns a greyhound named Gary's Gift which is still racing. Apparently the dog is not the fastest around. He seldom wins, but when he does it is usually because of luck and at big odds.
Ryan said he is very fond of the dog and plans to adopt him when he finishes his racing career. It was obvious to me that the two are already connected. It really felt like a good news story and I'm hoping it rubs off on his many fans.

i hardly ever take someone who has different views to me on a subject personally
the whole point of my posting on this forum (the only forum i do post on) is to get others views.
you make good points in your replies.
some i agree with some i dont
but i'm glad you make them without getting into personal attacks.
as for greyhounds and adoption, it would be impossible for me to race a greyhound after having one as a companion.
even leroy has scars left from racing, much less than foo had.
racing does greyhounds no favours, it leaves many dogs with lots of mental problems.
with me leroy is like i'm his bestest friend but he is afraid of everyone and everything else.
when i take him out for walks, if we are on our own his heads up and hes striding along like hes king of the world
if he hears or sees anyone he becomes timid and wants to hide.
foo was a little like that too and it took at least a year before he was close to normal.

I guess when it comes to racing greyhounds it's a matter of personal experience and opinion. For example, I had a friend who owned and ran a greyhound who retired a champion. My friend said the dog loved racing and the trainer was a fine and caring person. My friend adopted the dog after it's retirement and she was all he ever talked about. But less than a year later she developed cancer and despite spending many thousands to save her, she died. He cried for days. He loved that greyhound and I am absolutely certain that he would never have allowed her to continue racing if it was causing suffering of any kind.
