If he was paying tax, he was a taxpayer. That's a fact, not an opinion.

And if the reason he has no money is  because the Government prevented him from working, that is also a fact, not an opinion.

The fact is...he would never in his liftetime, several lifetimes, paid enough tax to cover the legal expenses he , as an illegal entrant, and working illegally, and his equally illegal entrant wife, would have generated to pay the massive legal expense paid to keep them in the country they illegally entered.

More than likely it was one or more immigration lawyers that coached the family hoping to fool the authorities, and if need be prolong deportation, and manipulate the system to their advantage.
More than likely the decision to have children was part of the agenda.

The media then gets involved, beats up the story, often being more of fiction than fact.
It was claimed that the family had not been truthful in visa applications and evidence suggested they came to Australia as economic refugees which do not meet the requirements.

I have no misgivings of allowing genuine refugees into this country (with limitations).

More than likely this …… More than likely that ……

Who is writing the fiction here?

You probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference...

So where is the money he had earned/saved for his defence?

Do you understand what legal representation costs? Far more than an average wage earner can afford.

I'm fairly sure he wasn't making much more than enough to live on. Several hundreds of thousands of dollars probably weren't available. Do you have that available if you fall foul of the law? I don't care how law abiding you are, there is always something (or someone) that can trip you up, regardless of your innonence. Normally criminal prosecutions don't result in costs being awarded.

So if you're falsely accused of something criminal, you don't get your legal fees back, even if you are proven innocent.

Yet another instance of people pontificating on matters they have no idea about.

The thing being forgotten is these people are not law abiding. They came here illegally, stayed here illegally and worked here illegally. They knew their activities where illegal, so no innocence involved. Then when caught out acting illegally, they " tried it on " with our legal system for years, using every avenue their smarty pants lawyers could find to choke up our courts and continue to live illegally in our country. All the time causing resentment and distrust towards other legitimate, law abiding refugees who followed the correct procedures.

People who show such disregard for our laws, rights and sovereignty are not the sorts of people Australia should be welcoming as part of our refugee programme.

I say let them take their immigration tattslotto win - the door has been shut to the usual swarm , and let everyone get on with living in a renewed society free from the ambient stress of constant leak of benign invaders

We rely on the government to make laws, and we rely on the government to enforce laws. What good are laws if they can be broken on sentimental grounds, by dubious entities looking to subvert the laws for their own agenda?

And that's the rub. There is a system in place to allow a very generous ( by world standards ) number of citizenship placements for those who are genuine refugees. Many tens of thousands of people successfully work through this system without all the fuss, kicking and screaming to be accepted legally in our country and most go on to be hard working, responsible citizens.

This family did not meet the requirements, but continued to put one finger in the air to us and our rules, by staying here and working illegally.

What their supporters don't seem to understand is this family ( and their supporters ) are doing immense damage to Australia's humanitarian refugee programme by encouraging illegals to lay numerous unfounded legal appeals, costing the taxpayers millions of dollars. The result is many Australians feel a sense of resentment and animosity towards refugees in general, as the genuine cases are grouped in with these illegals in their eyes.

Rather than supporting this family who clearly have no right to be here, the Lawyers representing them and their unfounded legal appeals would be much better utilising their skills to represent genuine humanitarian cases who are languishing in detention centres.

Because of changed cirumstances - there is a global pandemic on at the moment , to grant amnesty might be seen by some as respectful of the gravity of that ongoing calamity

Is that all you've got?

Did the au pairs seek permanent residence?

Did they claim danger of returning to their homeland for fear of retribution?

Did they marry other au pairs and have children to try to anchor and extend thier stay in Australia?

Did they engage human rights lawyers to enforce their stay in Aus to the tune of $4 mil plus in an attempt to force the Aus government  into submission?

They didn't need to - they had people in high places to do it for them.
