I have one very simple answer to over population, at least in westernised countries, but it will not be popular. Western governments have adopted positions and policies which actually encourage over-population. They do this to ensure ever increasing expansion of the economy and to balance government budgets. Its all about the money and nothing else.

At the stroke of a pen, governments could scrap the economic support they provide for families with children. The result would be a dramatic decline in people having large families. Scrap the child care allowances, scrap family tax benefit A & B, Scrap the extra payments given to people on welfare who choose to have large families. Scrap free education and charge parents some of the cost of providing the service etc. etc

If we want to be more moderate, we could just cut the child subsidies out after the first two kids in the family. ie. You still get all the benefits for the first two children, but after that, you are on your own. This would be a lot more politically palatable.

Yes its harsh, but it would work. The governments that are brave enough to remove subsidies to families may save the planet, but they would not get elected again.

Solve over population and you solve the pressure we are placing on our natural resources and environment.

This is something I don't like to hear. I don't agree with capping the benefits after 2 children as this is what some extreme right wingers want and  some ..... Well, they have some racist motives in their take of the whole situation. Many twist the issue around to support their filthy racist agenda. But you may be right with the capping when we look at the larger picture and all that is involved.  I hate to see implemented but we have an issue with too many people. So I guess it will have to be looked at. This may make some think twice. I think if it were ever to be implemented, a capping at 3 would be better.

There are some small countries now that have nearly more and I think there's one that has more of its people in another  than in it That must say something.

Yo are correct about solving overpopulation which would relieve the stress on the environment. It is very depressing to think about the daily loss of  forest in the Amazon.

I don't think anyone wants to hear it. Our whole society has been based on ever increasing population to sustain ever increasing economic growth and many people have got so used to government financial assistance with children that they consider it a right.

Rights aside, the biggest problem with reversing population growth is that it would genuinely damage the economy and leave many people worse off financially. This really isn't such a big deal if you look at what we are already doing with energy policy. As a society we have decided we need to transition to renewable energy. This has already come at a great cost to the general public with energy costs soaring as we subsidise the development and implementation of renewables. Not only has it increased utilities costs for home owners, it has smashed our industries and undoubtedly led to higher unemployment and stagnant global economies ( even before COVID ) So we have already shown, we are willing to cop it in the wallet when global change is required. Reducing population growth is no different to introducing renewable energy sources.

As for removing government hand outs to large families being racist, it has no basis on race. It affects all races the same. If some cultures are contributing more to over population and destruction of our environment, then they should be encouraged to change, in the same way we encourage the Japanese to cease commercial whaling or we encourage poor countries to protect their native forests rather than cutting them down. Both of these practices are based on long held cultural and human rights practices.  Its not racist, its just working together with a common goal to save our planet.

I'll reply more later. Sorry, I wasn't very clear on the race thing. I  didn't mean gov'ts. I was referring to some individuals and their narrative. A couple of poloticians in Australia and some of these "anti"  groups are the culprits.  They look for the scapegot.

More to reply later.

Can't wait.

You're on to it dvd.h! There's a small  group of bullies, both male and female who have intimidated certain members here. One of their victims is a female who has been unfairly targeted. But she has shown courage and resilience! They also attack newbies who complain about sellers etc. This happens on another board. Anyway, I won't go in to it here. Others have mentioned this before.

People should be allowed to come and discuss certain subjects without being attacked, have untrue info posted about them or mocked. If someone (as is the case here) doesn't like the person or the subject being discussed, they don't have to read it. They can move on. Simple!

Anyway, the GMO issue is a main stream discussion. It shouldn't be one to shy away from.

Plus, it's still relevant. Even if this thread is 5 years old, the GMO debate hasn't gone away. If anything, the concern is becoming more acute.

You have implied that I am not using an ID that you believe I have and use on another Ebay board. That isn't true.  State what that alleged other ID is, please. They deserve to know that they are me. So do I. And I don't give a pass on people implying that I'm a liar.

Do you have something to contribute to the topic, or are you just here to snipe and gripe?

I'm here at the moment to do exactly what I did. Try to get an answer for my original question that implies that I am a liar. And you?
