All the links and graphs where for previous years, hence pre COVID............
Agreed, but they where in response to Debra's assertion that the Victorian economy was leading the country under Dan Andrews governance. All the commsec figures show is that Victoria was rapidly increasing its population through high migration levels. As illustrated in the last post, this is not improving living standards for Victorians on the ground. It is actually having the opposite effect of lowering living standards for existing Victorian residents. The ABS GSP per capita data shows Victoria is actually lagging other similar states in economic productivity.
That is what the initial discussion was about.
As for Covid and Victoria, obviously the extended Dan Andrews lockdowns are going to have negative repercussions for quite awhile. I am as concerned about this as everyone else and don't take any joy from seeing Victorians ( including members of my direct family that live and run businesses in Victoria ) suffering. I truly hope Debra's unbridled enthusiasm for recovery proves correct and my more cautious reservations are proved completely wrong.

commsec is fully owned by and a subsiduary of Commonweath bank Australia's largest bank
"In states like South Australia ( oldest population by state in Australia ) and Tasmania ( second oldest population by state in Australia ) and Victoria, ( high migrant population and a lot of people relying on social security payments generally ) the most accurate indicator of how the state is really doing for ALL individuals ( not just those with a job ) is GSP per capita. This is also the standardised accounting method used world wide to accurately assess productivity."
net overseas migration was the major contributor to population change in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Very true.
That definitely needs to slow down as it's become ludicrous especially in house rentals where some are paying half their weekly wages in rent even in the country and expansion out of Melbourne is getting over the top.

Hopefully there is a quick recovery and as the most liveable city there should be plenty of people out and about bringing it back to life but hopefully in a safe manner.

Hey Boris! think about this. It took months for Victoria to get to the position it's now in i.e almost total elimination of covid, not 4 weeks. The U.K is almost on the verge of winter i.e flu season which puts the health of Brits in an even more precarious situation.

I think everybody on this board, including David, KNOWS what an "idiot" is - a stupid or foolish person. But who qualifies as an idiot is a matter of opinion. Some would argue that Boris Johnson has acted foolishly at times in his management of Covid-19. After all, he (and Trump} contracted the virus while playing it down at the time. Anyone who disagrees can contribute to the discussion by offering their opinion.
