They were driven by a spirit of patriotism,
Little knowing what hell awaited them.
The dreadful masks were seeped with sulphur gas;
Their breath blistered, their eyes tormented.
They were brave, on one day dreaming of glory
And the next day surrounded by the pointless brutality of war.
We owe them much, and the pity of it is that none of those who lost their lives in the battles of that time can ever be repaid. We can only remember them. Their lives were important, and should not be forgotten.
