This is the last post I'm going to make on the subject, unless anyone asks me a direct question that requires a response. And all I am going to do is link to a blog article by someone who is in a better postion than I am to respond to the following, common responses when this subject crops up (the writer took issue with another site allowing the sale of these items, and began a petition).
“How are these items (golliwogs) racist?”
“This is political correctness gone MAD!!!!”
“I don’t find these things (golliwog dolls) racist.”
“But I love them! How can they be a symbol of hate?! Oh noooooooes!”
“Well, in the UK/Australia/Canada we don’t view these dolls as racist or offensive. Lighten up, jeeze!”
“I am black/partially black and I make/own these items and I’m astonished by your petition!”
“I am/know a black person and I/they collect these items as a reminder of how black people were treated.”
This one is my favorite so I saved it for last- “There are bigger, more pressing issues regarding race. Why don’t you spend your time and energy on a bigger issue?”
I hope there are some people here who are open to having their perspective challenged. I know I am, but so far 'get over it', and 'I liked mine when I was little', isn't doing it for me. Sorry.
