Ah, bugger - I'm in the "ignore it" camp, so never bothered trying to hide it myself as the icon is thankfully not particularly intrusive (all the little notifcations etc used to bug me as they don't serve any purpose for me personally, but I realised I was just wasting energy on trying to keep them clear, so now they just sit there in all their pumpkin-orange glory, gathering nought but numbers 
)
