Hope it's not a silly question,as I usually use the label method, which is automatic for notifications to the buyer.
If you mark the item as sent, the buyer receives an email letting them know that.
If you then add the tracking number, it's loaded on to their purchase history, but no second email is sent.
If you add the tracking number first, which also marks the item as sent, the tracking number usually seems to be included in the email sent to the buyer, as well as their purchase history.
