If the item is new Australia Post will pay up to $100 of the WHOLESALE value, not the retail value. Claims over $50 need to include a wholesale invoice to prove value.

@offroad - there is nothing on the AP website to indicate what you are saying.

 

On the website it says:

"Most of our services come with up to $100 compensation for loss or damage. Should your item be lost or damaged, and you haven’t purchased Extra Cover, you may be entitled to compensation of up to $100 and a refund of postage (proof of value may be required)."

 

All this means is that as long as you keep the receipt for the item being sent as well as the lodgement receipt, you should be able to make a claim.

 

I hand make the majority of my items, so there is no wholesale value - I just take a screenshot of the ebay transaction whereby they can see the value the buyer paid and it has not been an issue.

 

I would like to know where you got that information from as it seems at odds to the AP position.
