Sorry raqshaki perhaps I didn't say it clearly enough in my post.  I put newspaper into the cup, wrapped it in bubblewrap, wrapped it again in 4-5 sheets of newspaper separately from the side plate and saucer - then put it in a box, taped the box then wrapped the box in 4-5  sheets of newspaper and THEN put the box into the satchel.  I believe that if I dropped that 1.2mt on to concrete it would not smash the handle.  Thanks for you input and your suggestion though...
