but I haven't done an auction for a very long time and they can be a bit of an unknown. 

Not if you start your auction at the same price you were going to do as BIN.

Either one person bids and wins, in effect the same as a BIN or a few others may chime in and the price increases. If someone buys it on a BIN very soon after it's listed, you always wonder what it may have done in an auction.
