An interesting little story on this one. Around 25 years ago a number of farmers in my district ( including me ) got into trouble in Paul Keatings " recession we had to have " with interest rates of up to 27% on working overdrafts. It got to the point where several farmers where sold up by the banks. One particular family had their land sold off, but wanted to stay in farming and had arranged to sharefarm for a neighbour if they could manage to get hold of a farming plant ( machinery ). Their own machinery had been repossessed by the bank and was due to be put to a mortgagee clearing sale by the creditors.

The day of the clearing sale was cold and windy.  Most of the districts farmers turned out in a show support for the family and emotions where running high. Word got out that a particular local was going to bid on some of the main items of machinery and buy them back for the family. If anyone saw this guy bidding, they would pull out and let him have the gear. That is exactly what happened, much to the chagrin of the slick city mortgagee auctioneers. The sale was a no reserve auction and the family bought back all of the main items of plant for a few thousand dollars.

They went on to farm successfully in the district and eventually brought some of their old land back. I just hope we don't get back to those bad old days with the current drought.
