I Used to shear for several weeks in a large 6 stand station shed that had one of these set ups when I was young. It was the last and biggest shed we did for the year and there was always a bit of a build up to it as smaller shearing teams came together for the big shed. There was a lot of competition between shearing teams and a full day ( and late night ) " cut out " party down by a lake when shearing was completed. One of the older shearers in the team I worked with was a bit of a prankster who pulled all sorts of tricks on everyone in the shed. ( it was a lot of fun )

Anyway one of the shed hands used to annoy all of the other wool handlers by just wandering out of the shed every half hour to have a smoke, leaving the others to run even faster to cover for him. ( and the pace was pretty frantic anyway )

The prankster shearer waited until the end of lunch when the ancient old stationary engine was fired up and the overhead shaft gear was turning at full speed and he snatched the work shirkers smokes from the lunch table. He then aimed carefully and threw them into the wide spokes of the flat belt wheel that ran the overhead gear. Inertia held them there nice as you like. The work shirker could see the smokes, but couldn't get to them until the run was over and the engine was switched off for afternoon smoko, at which point they simply dropped back down to the floor unharmed .

It was absolutely classic............Smiley Very Happy

Not sure of the history of this building in Ross.

It is in the middle of nowhere................there is nothing anywhere near it.

I love it though.

That's a nice one Stawka.  I've got one of a black birdie too - I'd forgotten I had it.  It's a butcher bird apparently
