The Health minister and advisers have confirmed they didn't advise Andrews to lock everyone up at night. From all accounts none of the professionals advising Andrews believed it was required. It appears it was all Dan Andrews idea. 

 

This is one of the things that have lead people to suggest he is acting like an out of control dictator.

 

As for having Zero cases today. I,m genuinely pleased for you. It has been extremely traumatic for many Victorians and left damage that will take many years to overcome. That is why it is so important to get to the bottom of why it got so out of hand in Victoria when every other state was handling outbreaks much more professionally.

the curfew was hard, but effective.. an example of why we had a curfew in place is the girls who came from Qld to melb for a party... then took the virus back to Qld with them and infected other people there, though everything was closed, it would be near impossible for police to stop large party gatherings in homes.  to see people saying Andrews did it for power and because he's a 'control dictator' is ridiculous.. power for what exactly??  the state Govt would be missing out on huge tax receipts from being in lockdown. so it' was a disadvantage to them as well

kmart opened it's doors at midnight last night and they say they had 10,000 people through the doors,,, our economy will be quick to recover  Victoria has been the best economic state in the country for years under Andrews and is now sitting at 2nd after Tassie.  NSW has only been at 4th spot all year, despite everything remaining open

sadly we have 2 cases and 2 deaths today

I hope you are right debra. It is not in anyone's interest to see Victoria's economy stagnate for years as a result of the extended Covid lockdown.

Unfortunately the experts who really know about these things don't share your optimism.

I suspect we are being lulled into a false sense of security, right across the country as a result of the Federal governments Jobkeeper programme, deferred loan repayment schemes and deferred rental arrangements. Once these are wound back and the payments that where deferred need to be met, I suspect we are going to see the real impact the virus has had on our economy and it wont be pretty.

Stand by for the end of March 2021 when jobkeeper is removed and it will be interesting to see who is still standing.

@ debra, Im not sure where you get your figures from, but the claim that Victoria has performed well under the Andrews government is not backed by the statistics.

While recent figures are hard to find it is interesting to note that in 2018 - 19 ( most recent figures I could find ) the NT. actually has the best State economy ( gross state product or wealth produced ) per head of population. Victoria is languishing very low on the list just above S.A and Tasmania, with N.S.W much closer to the top.

it's hard to know how many businesess will fail or jobs will be lost.... but based on what i saw on our first day of opening.... everyone was certainly out and about and supporting businesses

The standard figure used for accounting purposes world wide is GSP per capita. ( or GDP per capita for countries ). This figure shows how much production and wealth each person creates and earns. It encompasses everything from unemployment, housing construction, the number of people on benefits compared to those working, mining, manufacturing and everything else into a single standardised figure. ie. it compares apples with apples, not apples with oranges.

On this basis, Victoria is performing very poorly when compared to other states. It also supports a concern I have been putting forward for awhile, that while constant immigration might generate never ending housing construction and consumption of consumables, it actually makes each individual state resident poorer as fixed state resources ( such as land water, mining and agricultural production ) are shared with an ever greater number of people.

While channel seven figures might show whatever the station wants them to show, ( fluff piece directed at viewers in that state ) the professional, accounting grade statistics recognised as the standard measure world wide, show Victoria was already performing very poorly even before Covid.

That aside, I do hope you are right and Victoria's economy can recover quicker than expected. With a quarter of Australia's population residing in the state, a slow recovery there will affect everyone.

sorry but i go by the economic quarterly reviews, you know.. these Govt reports done every quarter... and yes. GDP is one of the components
