Yes I have the serial number. All good there. I'll have to wait and see now. The world has bigger problems of course so I don't want to be a drama queen.
I haven't been able to check for replies here all day so sorry for the delay responding. I appreciate the help/support offered

That's good because I was immediately thinking an attemted switcheroo. There is a chance they may return the item you sold. There is a chance they may send you their item that may be completely unusable. There's a chance they could send you back a scarf, or junk mail. As long as they can provide a tracking number that says delivered, eBay don't care what is in the box.
As far as they are concerned, the buyer sent the item back. Some have gone so far as to open the package in the presence of the police. If it's an expensive item, then that is something to consider.
Make sure you save every bit of correspondence, including screenshots of the dispute.
I hope this works out for you.

They've provided a tracking number which is supposed to be Australia Post but it's a weird tracking number and not showing on their system. I have a really bad feeling about this

When you next go into your local Post Office get them to look it up on their system, since they can get more details about the tracking than you can off their website.
At the end of the day dusty, if the buyer can't show delivery to you then they shouldn't get a refund. In the meantime if the tracking number is fake let eBay know what is happening - maybe through "live chat" so you get a transcript of what was said by them.

Do you know it's definitely meant to be an AP tracking number? When I've had to return items, eBay's system defaults to trying to provide me a Parcelpoint shipping label.
Well it says Australia Post (in case details near the tracking number given). The number is 33yu003273301000650802
Is that a number format you've seen before? No evidence of it being lodged over the counter which makes me more suspicious. I'll call Australia Post tomorrow. Unless they've used another carrier or a courier but my address is a PO box so that's not likely
