"Start me up I'll never stop......"

Why would you think that you should only pay the Postage cost?  Didn't the seller have to buy the bag?  Let me know where to get them for free. Sellers are allowed to charge for packaging and handling, some actually pay someone to wrap and post items. While the cost you were charged is over the top (in my opinion)  You can expect to pay some charges over the actual postage cost with many sellers. I think a charge of around $2.50 on top of the postage cost, would have been very reasonable.

Shoppingbag, why would the OP expect the hat to be sent in a bag only?

This is what the listing quoted -

Please note that with wide brim hats, the need for a wide box frequently balloons the priority shipping fee.

Of course if the listing said "sent in a box" it should have been sent that way. The point I am making is that boxes, bags, bubble wrap  and sticky tape etc etc do not come for free, so why should anyone buying something expect packaging for free unless the listing says "free packaging". I supply all packaging for free, and state that fact in my listings, but I can't get it for free, I pay for it and just absorb the cost, but I am not a business, just selling personal stuff and glad to move it. Some buyers are still not happy, but think I can tell Australia Post what to charge.

OP was charged $20 for postage, thinking it would arrive in a box.

Instead,  it turned up in a padded bag......damaged.

Where's the cost of packaging there?

Are we to believe that it cost $20 to not protect the item?

IMO a hat should not be sent in just a padded bag.

Bubble wrap or no

Of course buyers don't get their purchases sent in 'free' packaging - the costs being factored in is a given.

But a seller who charges an amount that would cover packaging in a box, but sent the item crushed in a jiffy bag just to increase their profit margin is NOT a good seller.  They ought to know better.

Perhaps PayPal settled on the amount refunded also based on the fact that due to poor packing the hat will need work to restore it. *shrugs*

If a buyer purchases something where the postage and packing is quite high, if it is something that could be damaged there is the expectation that the money spent was worth it as the item would be properly packed.  Most of the time all goes well, but there are a few sellers who are lazy or only see how to get more money for VERY little effort.  I know - I've been on the receiving end.

For a few dollars a seller can damage their eBay reputation.  Is it really worth it?

I really get tired of automatic pro-seller responses. Read the complete thread.

The OP is not against sellers adding a bit for a bag & tape. It is about not following through with what was promised & charging for what was not delivered.

I do occasional selling & always put a couple of dollars in for bag etc either into postage or the item. If I buy I expect the same is reasonable.  I dont expect a seller to winge afterwards about how put out they were. Yes, when there is really complicated packing ( like a 1 metre high Egytptian sarcophagus) that requires thorough packing you need to make it clear up front or incorporate the hike in the item. However if you hike the postage & then send it squashed in a sachel (& I've had those squashed in the letter box) I think the buyer has a point.

As it happens, I am in the market for a 1 metre high Egyptian sarcophagus... Please share the link!

I'd be riled too & I am glad you got some of your money back.

I believe sellers have the right to charge a fair amount for postage & that may not necessarily be only the exact cost the PO charges them, but when a seller charges more for an item because it is going in a box, then the buyer has every right to expect it to arrive in a box. As for fees & extra packing materials, of course a buyer will be paying for these, but they need to be factored in to the price of the item and postage prices need to be within reason. Over double the actual price is not within reason, it's going to put anyone's back up. Stupid behaviour.

I don't particularly care if the seller is 'new'. If they said they were charging to post in a box & they stated it would come in a box, then it doesn't actually take any exclusive ebay knowledge to figure out that the buyer will expect it to arrive in a box & might feel cheated by the extra postage charges if it doesn't. I'd give them a neg myself, because of the fact they lied, they caused the product to be damaged & they put me to the trouble of having to make a claim. All unnecessary if they had just done what they said they were going to do in the first place.
