Postage overcharge

I was charged $20 for postage, in the listing the seller stated that it would be posted in a box, 1940s platter hat. I was quite willing to pay the postage, item recieved and it wasn’t in a box but put into an Aus Post expandable tough bag with a bit of used bubble wrap, postage on bag $8.30. Contact seller and ask why? Get told that I’m being charged for “expenses” bubble wrap, the bag etc. I contact her again and ask why she didn’t put it in a box, was told the PO wouldn’t accept a box. She also told me in no uncertain term to “send my hat back” No, it’s not your hat, it’s mine, I paid for it and was overcharged $11.70 postage. Nowhere in the listing does she state that she charges for packing etc. I’m sick of people overcharging for postage because of “fees”. I’m not here to pay for your eBay or PayPal fees, you absorb those fees into the price of the item you’re selling, you don’t hike up the postage. Anyhoo, PayPal dispute started, eBay has been informed. The seller has just informed me that eBay and PayPal allow people to hike up postage for fees, Uhhhmmmm No they don’t

Re: Postage overcharge

It's a humdinger of a hat.  I love it.

I would expect it to be shipped in a box as well.

That thing could've been crushed easily.

New seller - hasn't a clue (except she knows how to charge for retro gear)

If it was received in good order, I'd just move on.

But give 'em a neutral re the postage.

edit:  just noticed this bit in the listing -

Please note that with wide brim hats, the need for a wide box frequently balloons the priority shipping fee.

Re: Postage overcharge

Refunded for part postage or the whole transaction ?

And you responded both posts to DG so just to clarify which hat was it ?

Padi's link or DG's link ?

Re: Postage overcharge

OP said it was a platter hat, so it's Digi's link.

I hope the refund was only for part postage, and not the whole amount,

otherwise I don't blame the seller for getting angry.

If you opened a dispute for a partial refund, the seller would have refunded. PayPal will only force a refund against the seller's will or wishes if you opened a dispute for item not as described, or item not received, and they take quite a bit of time to do that after you escalate the case to them for review (which doesn't happen automatically, plus, in not as described cases, you can't get a refund unless you return the item).

The seller does seem to be new and may have not known how to handle it properly, which in this case is to your benefit.

Technically the use of a box was implied yet not promised. (I do get it, in that I understand why you were miffed, and I recognise being technically correct isn't exactly or always the 'best' kind of correct  Smiley LOL ).

In any case, there's no excuse for FB stalking / aggression.

Re: Postage overcharge

Just for the $11.70 I was overcharged, that’s all I wanted and I got it back, she stated she would post it in a box, it’s in the listing and I was quite prepared to pay the $20 postage fee she was charging, but when it turned up in a tough bag, bent out of shape, crushed, a thin layer of bubble wrap around it and the actual postage said $8.30 I think anyone would get annoyed. She is angry at me for calling her out on it, she found me on Facebook and started sending aggressive messages, she has been blocked. I now have to restore the hat back to its original condition, which requires a hat block, which I don’t have and steaming, I don’t own a steamer either, the bloody thing is going to cost a bit of money to get it back to being wearable. She has no grounds to get angry when she is the one in the wrong.

Re: Postage overcharge

ljhosking,

you ARE here to pay seller's costs! Most definitely so - part of your money and every other buyer's money is used by the seller to pay their Ebay and PP charges.

Same as when you go to any store - you are paying for that store's staff wages, for their rent, for the tax.

Can you imagine fronting up at DJ's and saying: can you knock a part of the price off, I'm not here to pay for your costs!

They would die laughing, of course and promptly call security to escort you out - exactly the same - in a manner of speaking that your seller has done.

God only knows why PP gave you anything back, maybe just to shut you up.

Your whole gripe makes no sense, it would have been exactly the same result if the hat was $80 rather than seventy and the postage lover - the final amount would have been the same.

Sellers have a very hard time here as it is - wouldn't surprise me if one they they all up and leave - I know I wouldn't have a patience nor tolerance for any of it.

Re: Postage overcharge

Could that hat have been repacked by Pitney Bowes with the GSP being involved I wonder - if so then not the seller's fault at all.

Not sure where you got the $20.00 postage from though ?????
