What to do if a seller sold item which does not belong to him?

What to do is a seller sold item on eBay auction (and was paid for it) - and then responded that the item does not belong to him, and a third party needs to be contacted to obtain it? Is it safe to continue with the transaction, or report it or eBay?

Can you post the item number here?

Is there anything in the listing to indicate that the seller is selling the item on behalf of someone else?

Open an Item not received case at the first opportunity. No point reporting to eBay as they don't care. Just open the case when you can - the seller will have to provide proof of delivery or they will lose the case. DO NOT let them string you along. My recommendation is to not reply to any communications from them saying they have sorted it/will post soon/have to wait for their father's brother's sister's best mate's casual hookup to confirm.

As an aside, it is almost 100% guaranteed that the 'seller' is a scammer.

Tonnes of this stuff going on, dropshipping, selling on behalf etc. Most of the big players on ebay do it, they just dont tell you about it. At least this guy is honest enough to admit thats what he is doing.

Just sit back, if you dont receive it by the due date, I always allow a few extra days because we are under Ausposts control.. Then contact the seller, with the intention of a "item not received" claim. No stress, if you are a buyer, ebay is on your side.
