seller reneged on done deal, how do i procede?

i won an ebay item at auction (a PC for $700).

the seller cancelled the deal as i was paying, listed the item as out of stock, and immediately relisted the exact same item (a custom item, the exact same ad relisted, not a new ad) with a higher price etc...

the seller did not initiate contact me and attempted to brush me off.

when i pressured the seller, advising them i had gotten a payday loan so as not to inconvenience them the few days until my pay, they say oops, bad luck, in short.

ebay does not provide an option to leave feedback for this seller, and i am not sure i want to buy a second hand pc from someone who isnt happy about selling it...

any advice appreciated, thanks in advance.

Buy a new PC. Or one with a Buy It Now price. Until a seller accepts a bid and posts it, it is still their property.

Harsh, yes. Unconscionable, yes. How things work, yes.

As they cancelled using the out of stock option, they get a defect on their account. They have to wear that and it will affect their selling.

Go to a real shop and buy a new laptop. Hardly Normal has many for under a grand. As do most of the other retailers. Plus, as an added bonus, you get a warranty!

On no account rebid with this seller.

They are happy enough about selling it but only at the 'right price' and as you don't know what that is exactly, you could get let down again.

I suspect the computer they are selling is probably okay as they certainly seem to have confidence in it. They obviously think they underpriced it first time around.

But second hand computers are a risky proposition online. Quite a lot of them aren't what they are cracked up to be and on these forums, we see a steady number of posts from people complaining that this or that didn't work on their PC or laptop or parts were faulty etc.

You don't know that seller. You don't know if their valuations are realistic or not (some sellers, especially casual sellers, can have an over inflated view of the value of their personal items).

You'd be better off, on the whole, going to a retail store.

End of year sales are coming up. You may be able to pick up something at a good price if you shop around a bit.

The real bonus is, as sons& daughters says, you'll get a proper warranty. You won't on ebay, no matter what an ad says, unless you're buying from a retail seller anyway. So you may as well look for the sales and go in in person and have a look.

Just to add to the good advice about buying a new PC,  unless you know what you are doing,  even if a second hand one is perfect.   You just don't know what it has being used for, I know a couple of people who have ended up with perfectly good second hand PC's,  but they had nice little infections as a little bonus.   So unless you know how to reload software from scratch (total new build),  just don't do it.

Totally agree. I know people who have offloaded PC's because they got a cryptolocker and weren't prepared to pay the ransom (I don't blame them, I'd bin the computer too............back up, back up, back up people!). It was made known the computer was infected with a cryptolocker, but the buyer's were still happy to buy. Why, I have no idea. The only way I know of (and I know very little about IT) to unlock is to pay the ransom (and surprisingly, 99% of the time, they will actually unlock your computer when you pay!).

I know less about it that you do, as I don't really know about cryptolockers but my take on it would be that when you are blackmailing people, if you wish to make it an ongoing business, then you would need to be seen to be reliable, to keep your word.

So if you unlock a computer when people pay up, I guess the next victims have more confidence that paying will get the result they want.

thankyou for your replies.
so i buy a different pc for just under $1000 which is also a good buy at auction (i am patient and frugal and enjoy auction sites), and pay immediately, and request the address so i may pick it up, and the seller cancels the sale and relists the item obviously hoping for a more active auction this time around.
again my funds are tied up for a week (or more?) and again i can not warn other buyers about the seller.
third time lucky, or would you say i have dodged two bullets and should have learnt my lesson by now...?

There would be no way at all I would be buying a computer/computer related item off some random on ebay

Just far too many things that can go wrong and end up costing a bucket load to get fixed/replaced

Not to mention the already mentioned risks of malware/trojans/scammer inserted oddities

And zero warranty

'Third time lucky' may turn out to be unluckiest of all as an end result

There wont be any sympathy if you try again, we have provided warnings, you choose to ignore.
