Hmm there used to be a specialist nautical dealer at our Antique Centre but he is gone. Bit too specialist for me I am afraid.

eBay completed item 161558316521 looks very similar - said to be brass but looks to me a finish like yours. Anyway it has been for sale several times and can't get a bid for around $100. Looking at completed eBay sales brass ones you can polish up do seem to sell for decorative purposes. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along.

I am less knowledgable, but siddies, that is spot on, good find.

A vintage fog horn.

The plunger is lifted up and slowly pushed down to be used on ships in fog.

A seaman would sit and continously at intervals lift and push the plunger to warn approaching ships in dense fog.

I would look through the yellow pages to see if there is an antique dealer near you specializing in nautical items.
