i wish we could work out the reason whales beach themselves like this and find a way to stop them doing it, very sad.
dont read the link if the sight of beached whales will upset you.

So awful i cried when I saw it on the news today.
Not the first time it has happened there but the biggest so far.
Over 300 dead they are waiting for the tide to try and save some of them.

so sad that.. and after they managed to get the 100 survivors out to sea.. another 200 whales beached themselves
there was ship called the PGS Apollo doing sonic blasting (or a seismic survey) searching for oil off Farewell Spit in mid Jan

you never hear of large numbers of whale bones being found that would date back to before mankinds mucking about with all kinds of modern (during the last 100 years) technologys being found along coast lines. to show whales were doind these things before we started using radars and sonic whatsits ect.
so is it something whales have allways done or is it a reasonably modern phenomenon?

that I don't know David, but they would be affected by sonic blasts for sure

I wonder about sonic Blasts as well but Whales have been stranding there for a long time
It is a Spit going out to sea, mind you this is the largest stranding ever
