i think it is very true !! after 27 years in the same house the amount of useless stuff in there was amazing !!
not an inch of cupboard space left all full of stuff we paid good money for and did not use or need
took me about 4 years to sell it all and declutter down to things we use and like
the adds on tv now before xmas and now the sales make me growl dam shops working everyone up into a frenzy of buying more stuff they dont need
and the car adds !! they TELL us to be jeleous if our neighbours get a new car !! we have to beat them to it and if they get a new one we are encouraged to damage it by squerting water inside it 
it's a terrible msg to send to make out that behaving like that is normal
and no one is ever the winner there is always someone with a newer /better one than you have !!
