we let just about anyone buy our land so why wouldnt they let them interfear with our way of life?
The issue of them buying property is a very real one. Overseas nationals are not supposed to buy established properties but there are easy ways around this.
A friend told me of one incident. Would be funny if not so outrageous.
Chinese man was in centrelink. Was applying for rent assistance for his daughters.
The woman in centrelink asked where they were renting and who owned the house. He said he bought it for his daughters.
"Oh, so the house is in their names, is it?"
He would not answer that, said they lived there as he was normally in China but they paid him rent.
The woman said-but the house was bought in the names of your daughters?
She explained that legally, as they were the home owners, they could not have rent assistance too, that wasn't on.
He left there a very angry man & I bet he just went to another agency and changed his story, or got the girls to go in and claim they were renting.
Overseas interests are also buying a lot of our farming land which is a worry. If we ever go short-of milk, beef, whatever, we have no claims on the produce if it belongs to foreign nationals.
As for political influence-we need to be careful. A lot more careful than we are.
