NSW Govt Offers Fluoridation Sweetener

The NSW government is offering a $7.5 million incentive that it hopes will persuade recalcitrant councils to fluoridate their drinking water.

But Health Minister Jillian Skinner says the government won't be supporting a Labor bill that would give state authorities power to force local councils to put the tooth-strengthening chemical in their drinking water.

Last week, Lismore Council overturned a ban on fluoride after seven years of lobbying by local health professionals.

However, there are still 15 council areas across the state that don't fluoridate their water, the government says.

Ms Skinner says the funds are aimed at encouraging those councils to reverse their decision.

The government wanted to support councils in making their own decisions, rather than take a big stick approach.

"It is for this reason we are boosting our infrastructure support for councils who have avoided fluoridation, to encourage them to deliver this vital service to the community," Ms Skinner said.

Councils can currently choose not to add the dental health booster to their water supplies, with several recent attempts by councils to block fluoridation.

A bill introduced into NSW parliament this month by opposition health spokesman Andrew McDonald would give the government power to mandate fluoridation in council public water supplies.

Ms Skinner on Wednesday said the government wouldn't support the proposed legislation.

"Recent outcomes have shown that with education and information, local councils are able to make informed decisions about fluoridation," she said in a statement.

Blackmail? Same with vaccinations....don't have your child fully vaccinated and you miss out on the school payment? If it's the right thing to do why offer money?

FLUORIDATION OF PUBLIC WATER SUPPLIES AMENDMENT BILL 2013
Page: 1

Those areas most at risk are  smaller communities, such as those on the New South Wales North Coast where local
councillors and health service providers are bullied, heckled and intimidated into restricting
the use of water fluoridation in their communities, with the resulting increased rates of tooth
decayโ€”children and other vulnerable groups being the most affected. This leads to a lifetime
of increased dental morbidity and, as we are now learning, effects on other organs such as the
heart. Heart disease and dental disease have been known for many years to be linked.
However, recent evidence shows that the link is even more significant than previously
known.

The aim of this bill is simple. The bill will give the New South Wales Government, via the
Minister for Health, the jurisdiction and authority to direct water authorities to fluoridate
drinking water.

In New South Wales, the Water Fluoridation Act was passed in 1957 and the
addition of fluoride is by regulation. As well as being New South Wales Government policy,
it is recommended by the World Health Organisation, the National Health and Medical
Research Council and every reputable health department and professional body worldwide.
In the documented entitled, "Oral Health 2020: A Strategic Framework for Dental Health in
NSW", the Health Department states on page 9:

In the coming decade, NSW Health will continue to pursue a fluoridated water
supply for the population and integrate oral health promotion within other
health promotion activities in areas such as healthy eating, prevention of
overweight and obesity, and smoking reduction programs.
On page 12 it states:
Fluoridation of public water supplies is the single most effective public health
measure for reducing dental caries across the population, with its most
pronounced effects among those who are disadvantaged and most at risk โ€ฆ
Since 2004 NSW Health, in conjunction with the LHDs, Local Councils, and
Water Supply Authorities, has been proactive in developing strategies to

icy - Why are they so desperate to put fluoride in the drinking water?

To stop the increasing amount of children with tooth decay currently (most likely to do with drinking bottled water (no fluoride in it).

To help children in lower socio economic areas have access to fluoride so their teeth don't get decay.

1 Sept 2013

Young children from parts of northern NSW without fluoridated water are being hospitalised for mass extractions of rotten teeth at nearly twice the rate of other children.

Dentists and paediatricians in Lismore and Ballina say tooth decay among young children is at Third-World levels.

The situation has prompted the Australian Dental Association to urge the federal government to use its influence to force councils swayed by ''fringe groups who peddle fear โ€ฆ and conspiracy theories'' to embrace water fluoridation.

erm no...this new development wasn't up for discussion on that thread.

You don't seem to have any inhibitions about posting endless variatiions on the same topic yourself so why the tone?

I think martini's question was quite appropriate. We had a very long thread posted on by both the anti's and for's for fluoride in the water supply. There was lots of links and opinions as to why some think fluoride in the water supply is a good plan or not.

This question in the opening post:

Why are they  [Govt?}so desperate to put fluoride in the drinking water?

The anti's will be against that totally.

The people for fluoride in the water supply will be totally for the above

Reasons why people have these views? All covered in the fluoride thread.
