Should Grandparents Get Paid for Baby Sitting

i think that depends on whether

the parent/s can afford it.

i don't know of any grandparents

who get paid for looking after their

grandchildren.

Yes, the parents should pay them.

Yes

When my son first asked me to do it, I said I would not accept payment.

He said it was not an option, they wanted me to be able to provide care without it costing me anything or them feeling like they were taking advantage, it was not "child care rates" but a substantial amount, enough to contribute to the household budget, water, electricity, fuel, car seats, cots, beds, bedding, toys etc. also they didn't want me to end up resenting the time I was giving, over and above the regular grandparent time.

I could have sought paid employment and not available to care for the children.

Now, I no longer accept payment, they are mostly all at school and I do school runs and after school activities, holidays etc.

The parents are in employment and earning money, if no relatives were available, they would have to afford child care.

that doesn't change the fact that

majority of grandparents would not

charge working parent/s for looking

after the grandchildren.

most grandparents usually want to

help Smiley Happy

providing clothes, cots, car seats etc,

that would usually be the parent/s

responsibility.

i assumed the op was talking about

grandparents who no longer work.

also they didn't want me to end up resenting the time I was giving, over and above the regular grandparent time.

in that case, i can understand why

they wanted to compensate you for

your time.

always interesting to read grandparents'

different opinions on this.

they were talking about this on the radio

this morning.  most grandparents said

they didn't expect or want to be paid.

there was one grandma who did accept

payments but was putting the money away

for the grandchild.  how lovely Smiley Happy

It all depends on how many children are there to feeed and how much the Grandparents income is.

Say for instant a sole grandparent is on the Age Pension and there are three children to take care of, I would expect that the parents at least contribute towrds the food bill.

Childcare is very expensive, and grandparents most likely want to help, but there must be a balance with the cost of raising children.

With 11 grandchildren, that is not an option! Woman LOL

Well, they kind of did pay for it, didn't they?

As did/do I, however I have met many who say "my babysitting days are over, raised my family, they can raise theirs"

I will never resent the time I gave to the children, it has formed a bond with them that I will always treasure.

yes, i'd like to think most parents

have common sense.

not paying the g/parents for their babysitting

service does not mean parents expect the

g/parents to take care of everything?

ie clothes, nappies etc.

There are probably more costs than you realise, outings cost and realistically, there are things like playgroup, activities, parks, shopping trips that have to fit in as well. I am not talking about part time care.
