can a seller remove an item which is under live auction before the auction has ended. There was 1day 4hrs to go. If not then this seller has done just that. I sent an ebay message to the seller asking why it was removed and told me that the item was sold on Gumtree.

Yes they can, the item belongs to them until it is sold and paid for.
As far as I know a seller can cancel all bids and remove listing so long as there are 12 hours left to run on an auction.
A decent seller, however, would have the courtesy to advise the bidders of the reason rather than just leaving them in the dark, but there is no plicy that says they must do that.
