I can't imagine why that should be the case, but you can prevent it from happening again simply by entering a bid of the highest amount you're prepared to pay for the item and allowing ebay's auto-bid process to do the rest. That way, you won't be tempted to pay more than you think it's worth, and may possibly even get it for less.
