Who pays for shipping for a returning damaged product

I received a damaged product and I contacted the seller for a refund.  Seller asked me to send the item for a refund.  However he only pays 50% of the shipping fee.  I do not understand why I have to pay 50% of shipping fee for returning a damaged product.  Who is supposed to pay for the shipping?

The buyer is to pay the return postage costs.

A good seller will refund all return costs but many won't.

For your protection open a dispute via paypal and escalate to a claim and you will be given the address to return the item via trackable post at your expense.

If you do not go via a dispute the seller might claim it was never returned and you might have a fight on your hands to get your money back.
