leave positive feedback before cancellation request?

So I bought this item from a seller and paid through paypal, but then I found out I already have a spare one at home, so I asked the seller to cancel the transaction and refund the money.

But the seller replies

"in this case please leave us a good feedback on the one you wish to cancel and advise by email again and we will send a cancellation request to ebay and refund your money."

So wait a minute, why would I leave the seller a positive feedback before I receive the item or the refund.

What should I do in this case?

The seller is trying to avoid an unwarranted defect, is my guess, which eBay will often bestow upon the seller for the sin of a buyer suddenly not wanting the item they bought anymore. (Refunds for any reason can trigger these, that's why they are asking you to effectively officialise the request, so that if eBay does give them a defect, they can spend the several hours on the phone that it often takes to bang their head against a brick wall and maybe, finally, get to talk to someone who can not only understand they don't deserve a defect, but also knows it's possible to remove the unwarranted ones - a rare thing for eBay customer service reps).

They are probably asking for positive feedback so that  you don't turn around and give them a neg for agreeing to the cancellation request, which can (and does) happen. I don't personally ask for feedback from buyers at all, and I definitely wouldn't for a cancelled transaction, but I can still understand where they're coming from, since they are facing several risks at the moment (not to mention expenses incurred as soon as the sale was made), and the buyer is facing virtually none.

Is this the same as returning something youve bought from a shop  but found out you already had one ?

I think the seller is comepletely justified in not cancelling the transaction, and you should give the seller positive feed back if he didnt. But good on the seller if he agrees to cancelling it.

If you want the refund I would do as the seller asks.

kuromush1,

Just because you discovered you no longer need the item and want a cancellation would't inspire no seller these days to give you one.

Can't tell you how many times have I read on the boards how  buyers either don't click on the cancellation to say they agree - just p..s off and leave it like that, hanging in the air for seller to have to wait the full period, 8 days before they can relist.

And then, sometime down the line, or even imediatelly - they leave a neg for seller!

As there is a deliberately contrived and engineered mistrust between the buyers and sellers - you have what is called a Mexian standoff.

You won't leave the f/back first in order to reasure them of your good intentions and they won't  cancell the item without it!

Give them the f/back for crying out loud, least you can do under the circumstances, you'll get out of  itscott free and they are left with wasted time, days of waiting listing charges, PP charges for refunds.

And, I fail to see what on earth has f/back got to do with receiving a refund.

If ther seller is a shonk no amount of wielding the treat of a neg over their heads will compel them to give you one, and if they are not a shonk you'll get your refund in a timely fashion.

The seller has not yet posted the item, all he has to do is refund my money and cancel the transaction. What risk is he facing?

What if I leave a positive feedback, the seller does not send item nor refund? I then open paypal dispute, but seeing the positive feedback, paypal decides in seller favour. I risk losing my money.

He is facing the very real risk of getting a defect from ebay because he has done you a favour and refunded your money.

Too many defects and he will be unable to sell at all.

How would you feel if you were partly responsible for a seller being thrown off ebay because you forgot you had an item?
