Can anyone identify this item? It might be a steamer?

My neighbour found this item at a garage sale and we haven't been able to identify what it is.  There are no markings of any kind on it.  It's made of aluminium and it comes apart in a way that suggests it's a steamer of some kind.

Here are pictures of the item taken apart.

Thank you for looking!

Looks like a coffee plunger with the plunger missing.

Possibly 1950's and Italian.

(Initial guess only)

Then again because if it's large container at the base, maybe something to press fruit.

Such as pressing grapes.

Thank you, kopenhagen5.

There's no coffee discoloration in the pot, it just looks like it's had boiled water in it.  Another neighbour suggested it was an asparagus steamer but had never seen anything like this before.

What a curious find!

Yes you're right, it seems more like a steamer of sorts.

Or used to infuse a flavour into something.

If we think outside of the culinary field, perhaps it was used to steam/sterilize objects.
