Air Bags in Cars

Can someone please explain how you get out of a car after the air bag goes off.

We were having a discussion about the air bags going off after and accident.  One of the woman who was with us is very short no taller than my 9 year old granddaughter.

don't they start to deflate almost immediately?

I think meep is correct.

My understanding was that children and small people shouldn't sit in the front where there are front airbags (unless they are de-activated) because the airbags themselves pose a significant risk to the small. If you google "small people/children airbag safety", there's lots to read.

they deflate immediately, well they did when hubby and me were in an accident.

Yes air bags deflate immediately but can still cause suffocation.

It's recommended that the rear air bags in some cars be deactivated when installing baby / child restraints

Thanks for the info.  

As none of us had been in an accident with a car that had air bags. 

I didn't know that the bags could be de-activated. 

The very small woman is a driver so no back seat for her.

Children under the age of 10? I think should not sit in the front seat...............so perhaps if she can drive and see over the steering wheel, she is safe enough with an air bag.

Just drive carefully.

Have seen many late model cars in wrecking yards.

Fronts smashed back to the windsceen--no airbags went off..............Richo.
