You can find all personal infiormation about Americans by looking on the net so now they want to extend that to Australia.

But phone companies and banks don't have as much information as a credit reporting agency.

To make matters worse Veda have been implicated in identify theft and are blaming a third party.
Then when the victims contact Veda their only solution is to offer a service to inform on access attempts for $80 per annum.

where do you think the credit reporting company get their info? your local green grocer?

Credit reporting agencies get their information from anywhere you apply for credit.....they have the whole lot in one place.  They even know when you buy a new phone or apply for a loan that is turned down.  And yes, from you local green grocer if you happen to have an account with him and he has done a credit check on you.
