Attempted phone scam.

This just hasn't been my year.

First my card was skimmed ( with a happy ending ) now this...

Gifted a flight for 2 with QATAR to Europe.

Had a problem and posted a question at their FB.

The next thing I get a call on my mobile.

I thought 'what excellent service'.

My phone number is not public at FB.

Anyhoot...the caller suggested that they could cancel the booking and rebook at no charge.

So far so good.

Asked to download WorldRemit from the Apple Store.

Went through most of the verify yourself until I got to an option

where you had to choose a verifying document from a drop down.

Medicare Number , Drivers License or Passport.

At this stage I went 'hang on, none of this was required n the booking'.

Told the guy I would have to check this out and get back to him.

Guy says it will all expire in 2 minutes so...

I hung up and deleted the app.

Now I am wondering.

Because I didn't finish the ID phase and deleted the app would the

scammer have seen any of my details ???
Would the app developers still have my stuff in their database ???

Still waiting on a reply from the app developers.

Attempted phone scam.

I hope not.....stop answering your phone for unknown numbers......they'll soon leave a message (if legit)

I fell right into the trap because I assumed it was QATAR making contact.

Learn as you go.

The pre-recorded ones are easy to hang up on.

OMG, best of luck with it all.

Maybe change your mobile Number.  It is a pain I know but may be safer at the moment

You're a scammer's dream, I hate to say.

I didn't answer your first problem about the card skimming, just rolled my eyes.

Card skimmers are easy to spot.

They present as different/thicker and if you grab and tug on them, they come off.  Do it every time now.  If they look at you strangely, just tell 'em you're not falling for that again.

This is how easy it is for them to put one on while no-one is looking, and come back to take it off.

As for the gifted flight with QATAR to Europe.....

Why the hell would you think that was legitimate??

Sorry this has all happened to you, but you have to be a lot more careful these days.

I have found out that remote skimming can be done from up to 10 feet away.

So much for near field rfid.

There are so many different types of eftpos terminals that the only

person able to see at a glance would be a crook.

Your advice will be taken onboard though.

"Why the hell would you think that was legitimate??"

My phone number is not visible in my fb.

The call came soon after I expressed a concern at QATAR fb.
In any case I did twig when asked for ID documents.

As you seem to be an expert in these matters perhaps you can answer my questions.

Because I didn't finish the ID phase and deleted the app would the

Do you mean that even though the app was on my phone the scammer could see what I was entering ?

I downloading the app outside of his whatsapp call.
That the app owner has my details even though I didn't proceed ?

Hardly an expert.

I keep my debit card in an RIFD enclosed folder in my wallet, that blocks any skimming, and I also have my handbag lined with RFID blocking as well.

Not entirely certain about how much data they would have gotten, but deleting anything on your phone is not really deleted for 30 days.

It's in your recycle bin for that long.  Whether they have gained access to your phone....I don't know.

If they were 'watching' you fill out the form, they may have enough details, who knows?

It's like when you go on to an online chat session (not necessarily ebay) they watch you typing.  I know this because a family member was an online chat person for Telstra.

I don't know what you can do about your details that may be at risk.  Sorry.
