Not just meal on wheels affected.

Aged care facilities and quite a few hospitals too.

What are they doing providing Sushi for cryin' out loud?

Dunno re Sushi

I am always wary of dining out/ buying TA meals, much prefer our home cooking, at least I know where it has been .......

In hospital I will only eat salads or sandwiches, wont touch their cooked food, far too risky

Apparently it's not the sushi, which appears to be cooked. Besides the concern with raw fish in sushi is not Listeria but worms.

Cold rice can be a risk for Listeria but only if it's been kept for longer periods.

Dr Sutton said the bacteria was usually found in foods such as soft cheeses, sliced meats and fruits.

I'm inclined to agree.

It doesn't appear to be the sushi this time around but I recall reading a report about sushi being sold in shops and according to the tests, something like about 60% showed some level of contamination.

Not talking about any raw fish fillings here, the problem was with the rice.

They suggested buying only from places that prepared on the premises & had a quick turnover, which makes me think the risk for meals on wheels, hospital food etc is greater as you have the food being handled and moved around a lot and sometimes on trolleys for a while before being served.

Actually, when I read the list of hospitals affected, it makes my blood run cold.

They seemed to be mainly private hospitals and in Vic.

My daughter was in a private hospital earlier this week. Luckily not one of those on the list.

But it makes you realise how much we depend on food supplied to hospitals, aged care homes etc to be wholesome and safe because these people who are old or sick have lowered resistance to start with.

The list of vulnerable foods is scary.

And here am I having regular salads of raw veggie  bought in sealed packets and patting myself on the back for being healthy.

Apparently freezing food   can increase the risks too.
