Once upon a time, in a farmyard, there were two chickens scratching around, as chickens do.
One of the chickens found a worm, and grabbed it.
Moments later, the other chicken found a worm, too, and grabbed it.
The first chicken pulled on the worm with all her might, but it wouldn't come out of the ground.
She pulled and pulled as hard as she could, but that worm stayed put, firmly.
The other chicken pulled on the worm she'd found, but no matter how hard she pulled on it, she couldn't make it budge.
Neither chicken noticed that when the other chicken pulled on their worm, the worm they had in their beak disappeared back into the ground...
Silly chickens, they didn't know it but both of them had a hold of either end of a very long worm!
When the handle on the side of the box is turned, the worm moves up and down and the chickens pivot on their legs, making it look as if they're taking turns pulling on opposite ends of the same worm.
