Re: VW campervan: the end of an icon

Bit of a shame if there is still a demand for it, it cant be that hard to fit a couple of air bags and ABS

without knowing the costs of the tooling involved, i thought the same

& i didnt know they were still producing them

had a 75 vw super bug that i bought slightly damaged in the late 80s (made a good profit too) i thought it was the last super bug made but brazil continued production for some time

I didnt know they were still producing them either. They always have such a carefree look - life's an adventure, live it to the full.

I havent seen panel vans around for a long time either?

Re: VW campervan: the end of an icon

The Kombi was first made to transport troops in the late 1930's.

The aircooled ones had a 25 year service book.

I used mostly Kombis untill the south highway to adelaide from alice springs was sealed.

Also used them for dirt tracks, mud, sand, water.

If you do not put the spare on the front they are dustproof. If you put the spare on the front

you need to shut the airvents in the dirt.

It is possible to obtain 15 KPL  if it is tuned, loaded & driven correctly.

They are extreemly reliabile but suffer from being not serviced or incorrectly serviced.

If it was wanted aftermarket fitting of airbags & anitlock brakes is not hard to do.

Most of them I have seen rolled had roofracks on them usually with one & a half times

the weight of the kombi up there.

The later ones in the water cooled range became too heavy & gas guzzling & drove like

a bit of a slug.
