The average Australian doesn't even know what a bill of rights is but can tell you what their footy team scored in the 1950 season
you are spot on with that, Australians seem fixated on sport and in particular football.
They don't care or are ignorant of what goes on around them and in particular their rights that are being stripped away over time.
And if Australia ever went the way of a republic the people would need a bill of rights first because as a republic the constitution would become worthless.
Sadly the sheeple will follow and do as they are told because they believe the government would never lie to them.

Big question.
I don't think that even the Politicians know why.

Is it because we started out as a prison and prisoners don't deserve rights
All humans have rights, but just because we have them, doesn't mean they can't be violated, and/or given up (waived) . This bill of rights you mention is nothing but someone's idea of what these rights are and how far we should go to protect our use of them.
There are human rights, and animal rights, then there are everyone's idea on what those are, and how important they are.

Companies have more rights than citizens, unfortunately. The right to build a 3 storey block of flats next door to you. The right to sink a gas well on your property. The right to endanger a national treasure like the Great Barrier Reef. The right to jack up your utilities charges by 25% without justification etc.
And how would a Bill of Rights stop all this?
Just look at America. The only thing the average person there remembers about their Bill o Rights, is that everyone has the right to carry arms.
Times change, situations change and a Bill of Rights may only be a hindrance than an asset.
What I thought 60 years ago to be right and what was wrong, all has changed dramatically and quickly over the last 50 years alone.
