Paying postage outside of original invoice.

I won an item on auction, the item is listed as 'Pickup only' however, I contacted the seller prior to bidding asking why they were not willing to mail the item, they reassured me that they would post. When I won I immediently payed via PayPal, a couple days later the seller contacted me stating 'you havent payed for post'.
My question is; am I protected by eBay and or PayPal if I pay for postage via PayPal oustside of the original item invoice?

You will not be covered by ebay/paypal if you pay the postage seperately. The item will still be looked on as Pickup and neither you nor the seller will be covered.
The seller needs to refund your original payment and then reinvoice you for the full amount.
Why didn't you wait for the seller to add the postage to the invoice before rushing to pay?
