I'm starting to turn mine off too as I relist, or list new items. I can't really see the point in it being there. As you say, no-one but the seller really needs to know how many looked and didn't buy.
I also lost my page view count in Selling Manager for most of the day (all of them read 0) although my number of watchers was still showing. Came good a few hours ago and has worked perfectly ever since. Just another eBay glitch, I presume.
