I haven't encountered this myself, but I was aware that it was happening for some people under some conditions.
There's an article about it on eCommerceBytes.

I had something similar about a month ago but not sure where it was,(but it seemed strange as most of the
lower priced items weren't there).
Did the same search later that day and all the others showed up as well,
Facebook do it a similar way now where they show all the ones that you may have clicked on first and the
others further down or not all,(it's becoming a real pain when trying to search),

I saw that when I was searching last Friday. I thought, get stuffed, it's my choice what I want to see, so I changed my search term slightly, then appeared to have everything. At least my search wasn't flooded with Chinese listings. Mostly because the item is only available in Japan. I still wanted to see them all though! Especially when there are less than 50 results as it is.
