How to I initiate automatic bidding on an item I am watching? Do I just submit a Max bid?

I am so confused about how to initiate automatic bidding. I am so frustrated. I have increased my bid and set a max bid. It says I am the highest bidder. However this happened yesterday I and I lost my item. I can't allow this to happen again but now one will help me. I write customer service and they do not respond!
