Why bid on an item in last min a doz times when no-one else is bidding?

If there are a lot of people looking at an item that will be selling and one person so far has bid on that item....why in the last minute would it show that that buyer bid over a dozen times, yet no-one else bid, thus keeping the sale price as the opening bid price?

If it sold at opening bid, then it will not have been automatic bids up to a maximum bid

soooo

a tactic to deter other buyers as there were a few watchers

someone who didn't know they could place one maximum bid, and eBay would then bid on their behalf to that price

someone who was really, really, really, bored

someone's kitten playing on the keyboard...:)
