It seems to me they take the postcode of where you are and the postcode of the seller's item and they most find the most obscure point of the suburb or a neighboring postcode & then pretend a helicopter flies directly to the most obscure point of the other seller's postcode and that's the distance.
is it meant to be using some sort of road distance or gps?

Don't even try to work it out....it usually doesn't work correctly anyway.

Usually it is 100km radius and then it gives you something at least 250km.
Ive noticed international sales popping up as well.
